Historic Shift to Current Account Surpluses. Korea’s Economic Miracle was assisted by a fortuitous international development. In September 1985, there was a 50% depreciation of the USD against the JPY under the Plaza Agreement on realignment of major currencies, causing a commensurate depreciation of the Korean won against the Japanese yen.
