The goal of SDG 12 is to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. In this video, we look at an example of sustainable production patterns that addresses the social dimension of sustainability: combating modern slavery in production. We talk to Dr Leeora Black from Deloitte Australia about the Australian Modern Slavery Act, a proposed legislation that would require large businesses to report on their actions to fix modern slavery problems in their operations as well as their supply chains. The Modern Slavery Act is an example of how legislation can have a big impact in changing the production practices of businesses. Rather than relying on individual actors to each voluntarily change their actions, legislation changes the legal structures that guide the actions of all actors. This shows the potential that leveraging the political system has for achieving the SDGs.
