This lecture examines current Amazonian populations, highlighting that the Amazon today is home to more than 47 million people, 60% of which live in urban areas. There are nearly 2.2 million Indigenous individuals living in the Amazon, belonging to more than 410 groups (80 choosing to live in voluntary isolation), each with their own distinct values and cultures, and speaking more than 300 languages. This lecture will dismantle some contemporary myths and stereotypes about the Amazon's Indigenous peoples. Learn about other key communities living in the Amazon, such as those of Afro-descendant (Maroons and Quilombolas), as well as those of mixed descent (mestizos, caboclos, and ribeirinhos). Discover current threats and trends faced by these communities, including the loss of languages and cultures due to modern forms of colonialism and oppression.
