Sumatra Peatland Restoration

As part of the Sumatra Peatland Restoration program, Belantara Foundation helped to develop an integrated farming that includes cattle fattening, organic fertilizer, pineapple plantation, and pineapple food products. This scheme offers enabling conditions for long term peatland restoration that not only align with global agendas for climate mitigation but also foster socio-economic viability of local communities.

Belantara Foundation utilizes a unique method for community based peatland restoration by planting trees using multi-purposes tree species. Multi-purposes tree species provide two or more products/functions in limited space. It supplies food, hydrological regulation, increases biomass, improves soil, and increases productivity of degraded land. It is a win-win solution, where communities can get social-economic benefits while also improving degraded peatland.

Belantara cooperates with the Wono Lestari Forest Farmer Groups (Kelompok Tani Hutan) to develop and implement the restoration project. This video describes their experience and highlights the best practices opted in the Sumatra Peatland Restoration program.
