Sources and Sinks: Energy, Land Use, CCS, Part I

How can we maintain the carbon dioxide emission equilibrium through sources and sinks, and achieve the long-term temperature goal as laid out in the Paris Climate Agreement? This chapter overviews those efforts through the framework of the global carbon cycle, or how carbon is transferred among the atmosphere, organisms, and the Earth. Terrestrial-specific processes that are both affected by and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions are profiled. These include ocean acidification, or the chemical changes wrought on our oceans due to carbon dioxide emissions. and reforestation and afforestation to help us stay within the carbon budget.
