Mining and Vulnerable Populations

In this chapter, Deanna Kemp talks about mining and vulnerable populations in order to understand the characteristics of social groups and consider how mining can impact different people within those groups in different ways. Vulnerability has both an external an internal side, and determines the capacity of a community to withstand shocks. Here, vulnerability is considered in relation to women and indigenous peoples. A case study from Australia that brings the themes of gender and indignity together is given from the Argyle diamond mine.
