Indigenous peoples possess a wide array of knowledge, traditions, and cultures, which have played a crucial role in the shaping, conservation, and sustainable management of Amazonian ecosystems for at least 12,000 years. Their deep-rooted understanding, practices, and innovation systems have been integral to the preservation of this ecologically vital region. This lecture will present some of the novel innovations and interactions between Indigenous peoples and ecosystems carried out in the region over millennia, long before the arrival of Europeans.
