In this chapter, Deanna Kemp talks about human rights and key international frameworks on business and human rights, as well as the challenges associated with operationalizing the corporate commitment to respect human rights in extractive industries. professor Kemp explains the three core pillars of human rights responsibilities as outlined in the UN Framework and then discusses some of the prominent human rights issues for extractive industries and gives four specific examples, such as the right to an adequate standard of living, the right to potable water and sanitation, the right to security of person, and the right to participate in cultural life.
