In this chapter, Daniel Franks outlines some of the key environmental trends associated with the extractive industries and looks at what the policy options are available to address and manage these trends at the national level, specifically in the mining sector at the site level and with oil spills. He uses the examples of the oil spill from the Exxon Valdez in Alaska to learn about policy success and what can be learned from this success for other environmental challenges in the extractive industry.
