This lecture examines how Protected Areas (PAs) and Indigenous Territories (ITs) work as cornerstones for conservation in the Amazon. A network of more than 6,000 ITs and PAs across eight countries and one national territory cover around 50% of the Amazon Basin. ITs and PAs show lower deforestation rates relative to unprotected forests; however, they are under continuous threat from the expansion of the agricultural frontier, infrastructure development, overlapping extractive concessions, illegal and informal gold mining, and policies aiming to change their limits and level of protection.
