The three pillars of Deep Decarbonization are: efficiency, decarbonisation of electricity, and the switching of end uses (such as cooking and driving) away from direct combustion of fossil fuels. This chapter profiles various measures of these pillars, such as the energy intensity of GDP and the percentage that electricity is decarbonized, and specifically with a U.S. lens. Specific examples are examined, such as vehicle travel.
