In this chapter, Professor Sachs talks about the shifting geoeconomics and geopolitics of today's age. While the West has been dominant for at least the last 200 years, east Asia, and especially the developing countries of China and India, are experiencing dramatic economic growth in comparison to the other high income advanced economies. Sachs explains the shift in economic growth among countries, and China's role in the world economy, by using data from the International Monetary Fund and population data. He also explored the economic history of China in the 20th century. Northeast Asia has joined the US and Western Europe as a third pole of endogenous technology-led growth, and this is supported by patenting activity data.
