This chapter looks into different types of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and differing definitions of ecosystems, including: A human-determined transition between different types of ecosystems can be called an “ecotone.” The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) categorizes all terrestrial ecosystems in one way; the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) categorizes “ecoregion” differently because it is a conservation organization. All forests are different, for biological as well as historical and regional reasons.
