Tensions Between Artisanal and Large-Scale Mining

There is conflict between artisanal and large industrial mining companies, which Cristina Villegas discusses in this chapter. Each type of mining can follow the other and lead to resource conflict. She outlines some of the practical challenges to coexistence and direct collaboration between ASM and LSM, including legal risks to a company, repetitional risks, potential commercial risks, perceived operational risks, security risks, shareholder acceptance, and others. Examples are given and ways to achieve a successful relationship are given.
